Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. The writer of Proverbs makes it clear that we humans seem to think the best of ourselves, but he tells us that God knows the truth. He not only knows, He examines what is in there, and He says he gives us what we deserve according to what is in our hearts.Īll the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit. (CSB)įirst, we can see that God knows what is inside the human heart and mind. The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable – who can understand it? I, the Lord, examine the mind, I test the heart to give to each according to his way, according to what his actions deserve. The Bible tells us a few things about the heart: Jeremiah 17:9 The word “pure” in Greek is katharos and the NIV Concordance’s definition for the type of pure that is used in Matthew 5:8 is “clean, pure, innocent, or clear” The passage in The Message translation, above, shows that “the heart” refers to what’s on the inside, where our feelings and private thoughts originate and live, “your inside world”. Then you can see God in the outside world.”īut, let’s explore more to find out “what is a pure heart?” What Does It Mean To Have A Pure Heart? ![]() It reads like this in the Message Bible translation: “ You’re blessed when you get your inside world – your mind and heart – put right. The sixth beatitude goes like this: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Matthew 5:8 (CSB) This portion is now known as “The Beatitudes”. One portion of this “Sermon On The Mount” included a list of blessings, for people having certain qualities of character. In this instance, He was teaching His disciples as they sat with HIm, but the crowds of people who followed Him were also listening and learning. ![]() In Matthew, we read about one of Jesus’ teachings that took place on the side of a mountain.
